Consumers will
frequently hear the term “energy efficiency” in conjunction with heating,
ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) technology, but what does this term
actually mean? In recent years, HVAC appliances and systems have been
recognized as a major untapped arena for promoting environmental health by
improving the efficiency of these appliances. Individuals can use
energy efficient appliances and update their existing HVAC systems to reduce
their environmental impact.
Understanding the connection between energy efficiency and HVAC technology
requires an understanding of the environmental impact of HVAC appliances.
HVAC appliances are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Greenhouse gases are those that are trapped in the atmosphere, causing what is
known as the greenhouse effect. In simple terms, the greenhouse effect
causes a gradual warming of the earth’s temperature, and is a commonly cited
cause of climate change and environmental degradation.
Emissions that lead to this type of degradation come from a variety of
sources. Industrial and commercial buildings are the leading contributor
of greenhouse gas emissions. However, individual residences also
contribute to the buildup of these gases in the atmosphere. Heating
systems, air conditioners, and refrigerators are some of the appliances that
have the most significant emissions in residential facilities. Despite this
impact, the HVAC industry has made strides in developing more environmentally
friendly HVAC technology. New appliances, such as newly developed
furnaces and refrigerators, are designed to produce fewer and cleaner
emissions.
In addition to developing new technology to reduce the impact of HVAC
appliances, residences can dramatically reduce their environmental impact by
maximizing the energy efficiency of their existing HVAC systems. Energy
efficiency simply means ensuring that existing systems for HVAC are working
well and without wasting energy. Things like leaky or poorly insulated ducts
can dramatically reduce a home’s energy efficiency, requiring more energy to
maintain a comfortable indoor environment within a home. Retrofitting
appliances in a household can save a household a significant amount of money on
energy costs, in addition to benefitting the environment.
The federal government in the United States has supported the adoption of
energy efficient practices and appliances through the Energy Star program, a
joint program of the US Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection
Agency. The goal of the Energy Star program is to help the United States
reduce its environmental impact and save money on energy through the promotion
of energy efficient practices and products. Using energy efficiency
guidelines, Energy Star certifies appliances that are up to standard to help
guide consumers in making energy-conscious choices when buying new
products. Energy Star also publishes guidelines for new home construction
projects or large renovations.
Programs to promote the environment often suffer because there is no clear,
immediate benefit to individuals. However, energy efficiency for HVAC
appliances is unique in that consumers will benefit greatly from updating
appliances and systems. Consumers will save money by reducing their
energy costs. Additionally, some states offer financial incentives to
individuals and business who update their appliances. The dual benefit of
supporting the environment while reducing energy expenses will hopefully help
to promote energy efficiency programs into the future.
